Purpose:
To revive bure-building skills amongst the men of Natavea
and selected participants from surrounding villages. The
revival of this traditional skill was considered essential
as most villages had lost the art of constructing traditional
bures. The skill once learnt will be used to boost Natavea's
potential ecotourism venture. This project was a joint initiative
between the community, Fiji Arts Council and Ecotourism
Unit.

Purpose:
To revive and transfer various forms of traditional cultural
expressions and skills from elderly people to the youths
of Ra. Activities included bure-building, mat weaving, handicrafts,
woodcarving, and Fijian protocols. The elderly people specializing
in various traditional customs and practices were chosen
as resource-persons working alongside the younger generation.
Song and meke rehearsals were well underway with daunivucu
Timoci Matakiviwa before the culmination of this workshop.

Mapping and Awareness Raising Program, YASAWA

Purpose:
To finance the trip for a staff of the department to travel
to the Yasawa's for the cultural mapping and awareness program.
Through the program the communities are made aware of the
functions and role of the Department and assistance available
to them for cultural projects and initiatives.
